Overheating question

Roadster fans,

The other day, my 67.5 1600 was running hot, but not pegging out.  It seems
that I had left the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner
disconnected.  Once
I reconnected it, back to normal temp.

Why would this make my car run so hot?
