I flagged for vintage racing this weekend at Lime Rock and lo and behold
one of the races featured a 250 GTO. The couple have owned the car since '67
and bought it for about $7000 back then. They told me it may be the only
unrestored GTO in existence. Very few miles and only "highway" miles or is
that "hi-speed" miles. BTW, they also own a Lotus 11 and some other high $$
car.
Lots of exotic high $$$ cars and even some oddballs running like a MIata and
a Rotary powered 13B Sprite with full tube frame and full flaired body work.
The latter car could keep up with any car on the track and provided the best
racing of the days as he toyed with E Types, the Lotus' and all the rest and
kept the racing tight. The only cars he couldn't keep up with were the
vintage F1 cars.
Our payment for flagging was free food, laps in a race car as a passenger
and the ablity to bring your street cars on the race track for about 5 laps
each day and a free hat. My Miata did well after bumping up the tire
pressures to 40 lbs. Because of speed "limits" I was only able to get up to
about 100 or so on the front straight.
If you have the time you should flag a race - it can be fun.
