Brian,
I think you're right about the 3.5". I measured last night and got about 4
1/4" from mounting plate to "outer" fender lip in the rear. The lip itself
came in at about 1/2", leaving 3 3/4". I assume I want SOME level of extra for
comfort. There didn't seem to be any concern in the rear as far as the "inner"
tolerances. The front wheel is another story. Since the well is arched, my
current stock wheel and tire setup is well below the lip, though the lip does
curve inward as it approaches the bumper. Still seems to be plenty of room
though. When I threw a set of 14x7 Panasports with 205/60/14's on it last
year, which were close on the back but fit OK by the way, the problem I had was
with clearance to the brake line that has the rubber sleeve on it on the
passanger side up front. I ended up bending it ever so slightly to get a
sliver of clearance, but it still made me a tad nervous. No problems with
rubbing on the outside. In looking again last night, it would appear that
going to a 15" wheel would alleviate this problem somewhat, for it was the tire
where it was closest to the wheel that was contacting the brake line. I'm
looking at a set of 15 x 6.5 wheels on ebay that I'm hoping will fit. Thanks
to all for your help and advice.
