Yeah... and what a trip it was. It was from SF to Albuquerque, NM for the Z
Car National Convention in 1998. It was during that trip when I truely fell
in love with my Roadster.
And the memories and experiences are priceless. Losing a wheel bearing at
5am in the Arizona desert then being saved from becomming vulture feed by Ron
Hamilton 70 miles away. Then... crossing over the Arizona border into NM I
blew a brake line. Made it an additional 100 miles into Albuquerque with no
brake pedal pressure. The worse experience I ever had was changing the front
left steel brake line with a small scissor jack, on freshly laid out tar top
in the Best Western Parking lot in 105 degree weather at high noon. I got so
much brake fluid all over my upper body and on the tarmac. I still hate
brake fluid to this day.
Anyway, I was able to pick my wife up at the airport the next day and we had
a great time for one week enjoying the Datsun show. But then I had to drive
home.....
I took as much of Route 66 as possible. Fantastic! The August thunderstorms
in the desert are something to behold. It overpowered my wipers. But the
top kept me pretty darn dry. Then five minutes later it was hot and sunny
enough to remove the top and cruise the country again.
Aside for the fouling of a sparkplug on the return trip home it was
uneventful. One day I gotta write do a good write up on this trip.
