ballast resistor?

My 66 1600 has stock points, dont' know what kind of coil, and the
resistor has never been hooked up. I don't even know where the heck to
wire it, so I never messed with it. It has always run great, and I have
only ever change the points once..doesn't seem to burn up points.
the 70 has the resistor, but the 66 always seems to run better.
So, I dont know.
