Splined/unsplined 5th gear question

I've searched all over the web and cannot find a good description of the 
unsplined/splined 5th gear.  It is my understanding that I want to have a 
splined gear, but I have no clue as to the difference between the 
two.  Does anyone have pictures of the two different gears so I can figure 
out what I have on my tranny?
