I've always tended to "over-goo" that particular area just because it is such a
pain to get at.

But last summer when I assembled this engine, I learned something new (thanks to
Dan Garrison). After assembling the whole Solex setup twice and having major
leaks both times, Dan pointed out that the base of the Solex manifold isn't
exactly the same thickness as the SU manifold. I happen to be running a header
of the cheap variety that has the thin flange with tabs welded on to sorta match
the manifold. On close inspection I discovered that the Solex manifold was just
enough thinner than the tabs on the header that the thick washers were cocking
sideways and not applying full pressure to the intake manifold. Off came the
whole setup AGAIN, and after some judicious grinding on the tabs, the leaks were
solved. The difference in thickness was only about .050" but it was enough.

Another trick I've learned is to snug down the lower nuts first in order to get
a good tight fit on the lower part of the manifold, then tighten down the upper
nuts.
