My first roadster was a silver '70 1600, back in 1984. Dad had a 2000 in
the early 70's, crunched up the nose and parked it. I guess riding
around in it got in my blood, 'cause I started looking for one as soon
as I got my license. I tried to talk Dad into letting me put his 2000 on
the road, but no go - "too much car for a new driver", among other
reasons. When I mentioned that I had found a Fiat X1/9 Dad put the
brakes on that and helped me find a 1600 in Chesapeake, VA. It looked
great from 10 feet away, and ran like nobody's business.
I got run off the road by a drunk old lady with no license in '85,
ripped most of the passenger side off the car, but nobody got hurt, and
the roadster was still drivable. Eventually found a '69 Firebird ragtop
with a 455HO that became my daily driver 'til I moved north in '87. The
1600 still sits in dad's yard, along with a red one he found for my
sister that she drove for a while and lost interest in, a white 2000
that Dad and I were restoring in '86 (come on Dad, get that one back on
the road), and Dad's first 2000, still parked in the same spot after 20
years.
After 13 years without, I finally got another roadster this past June,
in that same beautiful yellow/green as the one on the Rallye catalog
insert.
