I believe the solenoid is to allow extra air in to lean the mixture on
deceleration.  But that's just a guess.  Mine's disconnected anyway.

I've read that the carbs from the '70 are different but I'm not sure
exactly how, other than overflow to the air cleaner.  I haven't read
anywhere that you should switch out the '70 carbs for earlier models.
