Thanks to all who commented on my regulator problem. I found a replacement
Borg-Warner unit at my local NAPA for $45. It's very similar, but not
identical, to the Borg-Warner that was in the car. But here's the surprise:
replacing the regulator did not fix it.
So I started unwrapping the old tape on the harness. I found several old
butt
connectors in the harness and a broken wire in the female 4-pin connector
going to the alternator. I could not find a replacement connector, so I
rebuilt the existing one using female blade lugs from NAPA. I also cut a
couple of butt connector patches out of the harness and replaced them with
new wires.
SUCCESS! The meter now shows 12.5 volts instead of 16.5 (!!) volts. And the
inverter runs nicely, no alarms and no overvoltage shutdowns.
A big Christmas thanks to Laurie and Mark for getting us invited to the
Chandler Parade. We had a great time decorating the cars and socializing,
and it was great to see the beautiful Z's and a 510 along with the
roadsters. During
the parade, the crowd's reaction to the cars was a blast. I was especially
blown away by how much the kids appreciated the roadsters. They kept
hollering "Hey! Cool car!". The post-parade pizza was also fine.
