A lot depends upon where the notch is located as well as how big it is.
Reducing the section of a
stressed member near the outer edges is BAD, reducing the section nearer the
center than the
ends, when simply supported as this member is, is BAD. Better to re-engineer
the oil pan, if
that's what it takes, than to reduce critical cross sections in stressed
members.
As you say, Daniel, this member appears to be pretty beefy, but without an
analysis in hand, it's
not something I would mess with lightly!
