Gary, without it, the shaft would rotate. the oil holes would no longer line
up. The rockers will run with out oil

Oil - good
No oil - bad

Progress on my engine pull,
Hood is off
Radiator - out
Engine electrics - disconnected
Fuel - disconnected

Ready to go under the car for
Drive shaft
Speedo cable
Clutch Slave
Exhaust flange
Tranny mount
Starter ground
Motor mounts

As those who know me can attest, I am mechanically challenged. If it screws
into the top of the tower, it would block any oil coming out of the top of
the shaft. Is this what it should do? What effect is there to run with it
off, as I have been doing? Does it screw all the way in, or only part way?

Also, there are two threaded holes in the flat part of the top of the head
that take the same size threaded bolt, but are empty. Any one know what
they
are for? Why are they threaded?

It screws into the tower with the oil passage in it to lube the shaft.
