Question about Loose 5-speed tranny nut...

All,
    I finally got my transmission apart, and the nut WAS loose. Hence my 5th
gear and Reverse difficulties.  Does anyone know the best way to tighten that
thing up permenantly?  Also, it seemed like when I tightened it up, I couldn't
turn the shaft when it was in reverse, until I loosened the nut a little.
What about drilling a small hole through the nut and shaft and inserting a
cotter pin?  Thanks for the help.
