You can, that's what I've done. The only trick to it is being careful to
get the fan as close to truly concentric as you can so that it doesn't wear
out the water pump bearing. The screws need to be about 2.5 inches long and
as such, they will allow the fan to sit off center - at least if you've
taken all the guts out of the clutch.

I believe that you can use long screws to go all the way through the
clutch in order to make it work like it was a spacer.
