Thanks to all who provided info on starter R&R and fixing leaking solex
accel pumps.
I tackeled both jobs yesterday. First the starter... disconnected battery,
removed rear carb, this gave access to remove the top starter bolt, jacked
front left, removed tire to gain access to "triangular" opening between body
and frame, removed ground strap, removed starter wires, removed lower
starter bolt, backed out starter, turned so that solenoid was toward back of
car and pulled out through triangle with gear end last. The gear end flange
was kind of tight, but a little wiggling and a vise grip to pull on got it
through (Les Canady suggested notching the body bracket that forms the upper
part of the triangle if the starter would not come out... happily I didn't
have to). I replaced it with the gear-reduction hi-torq starter that Dean
Apostle sells. It was a new (not rebuilt) starter, and is the same length
body, but about 1/4" smaller in diameter than the original and does not have
a snout on the gear end. This made it very easy to get in as there was no
binding. Installed in exact reverse of removal. Took a little over an
hour. Works great. Very strong cranking and a much nicer sound than the
original (especially in its declining days). So... it was a pricy starter,
but I would do it again.
For the solex leaks... removed both carbs. Already had new gaskets, but
could not get the accel pump tight. Went to the hardware store and got new
screws... four 8-32 3/4" stainless and two 8-32 1/2" brass for each carb.
The heads on these are slightly larger than the originals but fit fine. The
new larger heads allowed all the torq I would be willing to put on so small
a screw. Reassembeled with medium loc-tite... Will see how tight they
stay. Also replaced the set screws that hold the choke cable and springs as
I had a non-matched set of screws... this was purely cosmetic.
Altogether it was about 2.5 hours of work plus 1 hour for the hardware store
trip and ~1 hour to get out all the tools, put them away again and clean
everything up.
Thanks again to all who provided advise. Would have been a much bigger job
without it.
