One thing that is often overlooked is that something like
the generator is EASY to rebuild!
We have gotten into a bad habit of "just replace it" when
all it might need is a simple rebuild. Brushes & Bearings
(bushings on the MG generator) are the only things to usually
wear out.
While there are some crazy people who still do things from
scratch, there are also shops who can undertake rebuilding
older parts to bring them back up to spec. Yes, even a few
who still like rewinding rotors. Other odd things exist
like cutting down a 1955 Dayton Electric Motor Company
(known today as Delco... which is now Delphi) set of brushes
to fit a 1930's Bentley Generator.
Broken mounting ear? Not a problem if you find someone with
a small foundry who can use the broken parts to cast a new
item. I've been playing with machining a billet replacement
part, then attempting to make the part appear to be a original
cast item. One nice thing about old metal working tools, much
easier to make a "as original" part.
Most "Home Shop Machinist" are a reclusive bunch, but there are
a lot of "old timers" who still do custom rebuild work. You'll
never find them unless by word of mouth. Funny one was one
fellow who had a sign
Machining rates....
I work, you toss the ball for the dog $25/hour.
I work, you stand there and watch.... $50/hour.
I work, you "help"...................$100/hour.
