Two things:
I tuned up the 2L on Saturday in prep for driving to Road America on
Sunday. Since I set the valves, timing, and dwell, I decided it was a good
time to replace my N25 needles with the N17s that were suggested for my
rich idle condition. I am running a 7.5 distributer with timing set to 16
degrees. With the new needles in and each carb turned out to 1.5 turns
for mixture, it was running VERY rich. I turned each carb in a quarter
turn at a time and it still was rich. I mean blowing smoke at idle and on
acceleration. I pulled off the domes and found raw gas laying in the
bottom of the carbs.
I replaced the new needles with the old N25s and I was back to only rich at
idle and only a small amount of backfire at downshift.
SECOND:
I too have a howel over 40mph coming from the rearend. I think it is my
wheel bearing on the right side but here is the symptom. I replaced the
left bearing and seal last year. With both wheels off the car, when I
turn the hub, on either side, there is a ratcheting feeling. Feels like a
bad bearing, but is it really the wheel? I know, if I really want to know,
tear it down and look. I would rather have the replacement parts in hand
before tear down and I want to order the right parts. Any thoughts or
someone with the same thing before?
