True Roadster story.....
Was in Los Angeles visiting the family 3 months ago. The day before
arriving, I had spoken with an owner of a 1964 SPL310 that was fully
restored that was for sale. Everything was redone..new interior, red paint,
chrome, no rust, etc... The owner had previously lived in japan for 10+
years and even brought the roadster back to Japan with him. The main problem
was after the car had been redone, he brought the car to a shop a while
later to have some engine work done. He then left the car there for an
extended period of time. When he returned to retrieve the car, not only was
the rebuilt engine not done.....the block was missing!!!
Even though it was missing the block....for a fully restored original
spl310....it was still worth the look, because a used 1600 block could still
be found.
So here comes the FUN part....The car was in storage, so the owner and I
took a 20 minute ride to see the car. On the way, I mention my profession,
and the owner of the SPL310 tells me that he really wants to sell the car
because he was considering moving to Australia to become an Ostrich farmer.
He then goes on to tell me that, he previously had planned on redoing the
interior of the car....but not in leather.....but in Ostrich!!!!
Okay.
Fortunately...the interior was redone in Leather..and not Ostrich.
Unfortunately...the car was really rough. Body damage on almost every panel,
a boat handle as a replacement for the trunk handle, Upside down bumper from
a 1970, no top, old carpet, interior never reintalled, only had the front
insert for the grill (rechromed only that piece?), wrong emblems, rust, and
a paint job that looked worse than Earl Schieb's.
Oh Well....
