Timing should never exceed 38 degrees BTDC. At 40 degrees you start
eating pistons. You can start at 38 degrees BTDC (before top dead center)
under full vacuum and mechanical advance and check for pinging (pre-ignition)
and back your timing up until it quits. Also, the very last thing you want
to do is adjust your carbs mixture after a complete tuneup, including valve
adjustments and cooling problems, etc. If you don't, you are blowing in
the wind and will not accomplish anything because it won't ever run right at
different RPMs. Also, on recurving disbributors, the points cam can be
removed and the slots that the fly weights run in can be recut to give a longer
or more progressive advance curve. Hope this helps.
