If you spin one wheel with a standard diff it will spin the other wheel the
opposite way IF something is keeping the pinion from turning.  If the car is
in gear it spins the other wheel.  If the car is in neutral, the wheel you
turn by hand will spin the driveshaft and the other wheel won't move.
Or your brakes are too tight on one side.

  I jacked up each and rotated a back tire (both tires off the ground).  On
one car, the opposite tire rotated the other way.  On the other car, the
opposite tire did not move.  What gives?
