Grant,
64s and 65s were totally different cars. Besides what you mentioned, the 64s
had no center console, four equally sized gauges, the dash was metal and had
a large round ashtray. The winshield has three connections points that are
straight pieces of metal for the "pitch the tent" top.
There are others, but your car sounds like a 64 to me.

Folks
Someone just emailed me about the car I'm selling on ebay.
He says the car is a 65 not a 64. So now how do I tell?
It has the footwell for the third seat, it has the one piece lock and handle
for the trunk, and the serial number is SPL31002663. 64 right?
