I had broken mainfold bolt in my 67 1600 head. I tried to
drill, then EZ-out it. Broke the EZ-Out. After an hour of
trying to drill out the EZ-Out, (don't think I even
scratched it, man that is made out of hard stuff.) I ended
up taking the head to a machine shop. The guy looked at
the head and commented, "Where did you get that from, a
fork-lift?". He then referred me to a broken bolt
specialist. The name of the shop was something like Bob's
Tap and Broken Bolt Remover. He looked at the head, said
he would have it done in 2 hours for $35. (He apologized
for taking so long, he was busy with other jobs.) When I
got the head back, it was perfect. For $35, it was worth
it to get the thing done right. I spent the good part of
several days working with that darn bolt, taking it to the
shop was the best thing for it. Of course, you do have to
remove your head, but even still, it was worth it for me.

An exhaust manifold stud broke of about 1/8" below the
surface on my U20
head so I have been following this thread closely. Is my
situation a
candidate for the welding technique suggested by Dan, Susan
and Andy or is
the stud too far below the surface? I'm thinking I may
need to bite the
bullet and take it to a machine shop, especially before I
make the situation
worse or damage the head.
