After driving our van to Nevada and fueling there (for 20 cents/gal LESS)
and finding improved mileage for that tankful, I would surmise that yes
indeed, California's love of oxygenates (MTBE mainly) is definitely
having an adverse effect. I would think that modern FI would be less
affected because of the O2 sensor being able to compensate, but maybe
not.
Our gas is somewhere over 8 percent oxygenates, I've been told. So
in reality they're watering down our gas! (I remember a Holley tuning
book explaining why going over 5 percent in a gasoline-jetted carb
is a bad thing...) Of course, lots of other states now do it to...
Be interesting to see what the out-of-state'rs experience is when they
drive in for Shasta next month..
