CO poisoning is not something to be fooled with.  CO bonds, quite strongly,
to the heme group of the hemoglobin molecule that each red blood cell
carries.  This causes the effected blood cell to become incapable of
carrying oxygen until the CO bond is broken - which does happen naturally
but may take days.  The result of this is that chronic exposure to CO, even
in low levels, causes a build up of "broken" red blood cells.  At some point
you will get sick due to your bloods inability to carry enough oxygen.  In a
worst-case scenario it will kill.  I used to work in an ER and spent a while
doing CPR on a guy who killed himself by starting his lawnmower inside the
house and letting it run.  Once the blood becomes saturated, there's really
not much anyone can do.
