All,
Recently my '68 1600 started to sound like a diesel on a bad day. It was
running well, but sounded like hell. So, I ordered a timing chain and gears
and tore into the project this weekend. What I found astounded me.
The sleeves on the timing chain (the pieces that fit between the teeth of the
gears) were disentegrating. There were fragments of pieces everywhere,
including the bottom of the oilpan.
Has anybody ever had this problem before? It doesn't look like normal wear,
it looks like a defective timing chain.
