The reason you keep your foot off the juice pedal while starting is because
the throttles are wide open when you depress the accelerator while starting,
defeating the purpose of the choke settings when they are correctly set up.
I have owned my baby for 20+ years and never had a problem starting, even in
20 degree weather.

I use an electric fuel pump and wait for it to fill the bowls before trying
to start my car.
