Autometer Gauges in a high windshield??

Hello All,
        I was wondering if anybody had installed aftermarket tach or a 
speedo in their high windsield car?? I am thinking about doing it and want
to use autometer gauges to match my groovey water temp Voltmeter gauges.
        If I do get that cruddy dashcap off anything I should do in the way
of preventative maintence before I install the new cap??
