Phil;

"Synthetic stocks start as a crude oil or natural gas" Soo, synthetics
aren't really completely synthetic? They still have some dependence on
prehistoric lizards?

Dave

Hey Fred -

They could not get the dollar bills ground fine enough so .................

Synthetic stocks start as a crude oil or natural gas from which ethylene is
produced. This is turned into alphaolefins - synthetic hydocarbons of low
molecular weight. Then they are polymerized (linked together) into
polyalphaolefins of heavier molecular weight. Some synthetics also use
ethers which are acid/alcohol compounds. Mobil 1 is a polyalphaolefin.

A short response and I bet you guys are glad:-)

Phil

What the heck is synthetic made out of, anyway? Dollar bills?
Certainly not
        olives/organics/etc if it's synthesized.

You don't have to drain the oil to change the filter. The oil in
the engine
is blocked on one side by the oil pump and on the other side by the
oil
oil galeries in the engine. When you spin off the engine you will
lose
little more oil than what is in the filter, which will cause the iol
to need
        topping off any way.

I would prefer to move away from dino based oil and go to something
that
        is more earth friendly.

        Peace,
        Pat
