You actually can get the DETs for about 2K. Tho expect to spend about 2500
for EVERYTHING (all the wiring, sensors, ECU, etc.). The non-turbo DE can
usually be had for no more than 1200 for everything, sometimes less if you
look around...figure an avg of 900 bucks there.
It is possible to put the motor in the roadster frame w/o having to notch the
front xmember, but you'll have to nestle it into that "notch" in the
firewall. I wanted to be able to access everything on the motor easily, so I
moved my motor forward a bit, and had to cut into the xmember. It's not too
tough though; about a 1 hour job. The whole motor swap itself is another
story... going EFI will require upgrading the whole fuel system, a lot of
rewiring, etc. But that would hold true for any EFI engine swap.
It's true that you can pretty much get about 230-250 hp from the SR20DET "out
of the box." To get the motor in the car, you'll have to fab a custom exhaust
for it, and you might as well throw on a K&N air filter. Don't forget to run
a front-mount intercooler, and while you're at it, turn the boost up to 12psi
or so. Voila... ~250hp from an otherwise pretty stock motor. Now save up some
$$, get some 50 lb/hr injectors, a new fuel rail, bigger turbo, reprogrammed
ECU, and you're looking at about 340-350hp!
I finally have the $$ to start working on my car again (but no time!! isn't
it funny how life works that way?!?) so I've got some crazy stuff I'm putting
together. Three numbers: 275 (and I'm not talking about hp :)
