I am polishing some carbs right now. The way I do it is to start with
Eastwood's Rubber expandible wheel with 320 grit paper to get rid of casting
marks and other imperfections. I then use a chemically treated Dixcel Muslin
spiral bound 8" wheel (yellow in color) with stainless compound to cut the
aluminum quickly. I then switch to a regular muslin buff with red rouge.
It takes forever to polish rough castings like intake manifolds. I suggest
you send it out to a specialist as it's not worth the aggravation and dirt.
It takes me about an hour to polish out the dome for an SU. I did a manifold
but it took several weekends and a lot of work. It must be sanded down first
as the casting is too rough to try to polish. Figure about 10-15 hours to do
a great job. I'm not a pro and don't have their equipment or knowledge thus
it takes quite a while.
Mike
