I would think twice about not putting the resistor inside the heater box.
The intended location allowed for forced air flow over the resistor,
allowing it to run cooler than it would in still air. Besides the possibility
of running the resostor above its intended operating temperature you also
run the chance of burning someone with the resistor mounted somewhere
else in the car.
