<.....One of the replies got me to thinking of the book "How to Keep Your
Volkswagen Alive"
by John Muir, circa 1970....>
Yep, this book is how I got to be a gearhead, it has some real clever
shade-tree fixes and tool improvisations. It has some of the clearest
exploded-view line drawings of any book I've seen. They also publish them
for other foreign cars. I had one ordered for my old Subaru (aka
water-cooled, flat-4 VW engine) and it was very helpful. (subaru is
japanese for the constellation Pleiades, so it was chock full of Star Trek
inspired sketches)
That 'bang it till it won't turn is XXX torque' has me a litlle skeptical,
as if the threads are coarse vs. fine thread, your number is going to be
very different. (screw pitch vs. amount of friction of head on surface)
Also the size of your hammer (yah, I know, here comes the flood of 'size
matters' comments) would seem to factor in. I know on my VW's, I incurred
more need for fender repairs/bodywork with my mondo-hammer re-installing the
rear axle nuts than I ever did in traffic mishaps.
Sorry, should have raised the <OT> flag,
