Hello All,
Today I went over to Stan Chernoff's for the first time to pick up a set of
front comp springs. They were the last pair Stan had and I figured that I
had better get them while the getting was good. There has been a lot of talk
about parts availabilty (or lack thereof) and also about prices. I have had
a lot of experience in buying parts for my car over the last year and as
Stan was taking me through his garage full of parts, a few things came to
mind.
Those of you who think that Les, Stan, Ross, Mike Kerr or any other vendor
you might patronize are getting rich off these parts have never met them.
They are all regular guys who worry about bills and paying the
rent/mortgage- in short they are just like us. I gladly paid Stan's asking
price for the part. Stan is a great guy and he is a walking history lesson
as far as these cars are concerned. I feel the same way about Les and to the
extent I have known them- Ross and Mike Kerr.
I know that no one likes to throw money away and I also am as fond of a good
deal as the next guy. I have never yet felt that any of the vendors I have
worked with have "gouged" me or have tried to take advantage of me. They
give a good product for what I think is a good price. Why people try to
haggle them down on parts is beyond me. When was the last time you haggled
at an auto parts store? Service is one thing, but parts are iventory and
these guys have overhead.
Restoring a vintage sports car is not inexpensive. Anyone who says so is
probably trying to sell you something crappy.
And it won't be one of our vendors.
