Distributor Points keep burning up

Happy Halloween.......BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Any ideas on why a set of new points would burn up, causing backfire and 
failure to run.

Another symptom is that the alternator keeps going from neutral position to 
30+ as you are driving.
