As for nice wagons, I crashed my Escort wagon (what a joy!) a year ago and
had to buy a new car. I'd been looking at the Mercedes wagon from 90-94, the
4wd models, but they were hard to find and typically out of my price range
(around $15,000). What I did find was the Toyota Camry wagon (production
ended in '96 for them). Hard to find, but not as hard as the Mercs. It has a
3rd row pop-up seat, 190HP V6, power everything, very nice ride, gets about
20mpg city, 27 highway - the same as my 4 banger Stanza, all for just over
$15,000. The Camry is one of the most reliable cars on the road too and I
never worry about roll-over with it.
Roadster content: It's been unable to start for the past month, since I
started monkeying with the timing. I worked on it last night and got a nice
exhaust backfire while trying to start it, indicating that it's retarded (my
wife said I was ;<) ). I think I've got the timing gear off a notch, so I'll
fiddle with that, as per Gordon's recent message, and see what happens.
A question: what's the best way to statically time it? Set notch at 16deg
BTDC, rotate distributor until it's just starting to open? I've got a
pre-smog distributor.

Consider the VW Passat wagon. More room for less money than the Audi, with
which it shares
an engine (the 1.8 litre light-pressure turbo-charged 4-cyl.). Great build
quality, MUCH
better rear legroom than the A4 Audi and that little 1.8 litre engine (let
alone the V6)
moves it out pretty darn well. (Though if it had been within our budget, the
5-series BMW
Sport Wagon would have gotten a serious look from me...).
Put a set of non-Firestone tires on the Exploder and sell it before OPEC
bumps crude
prices to $50/bbl and gas goes to $2.50/$2.75 per gallon, then buy a
vehicle that allows
you to drive safely by virtue of handling and maneuverability, and not just
the ability to
take a hit because you're bigger than the other guy (unless he is also
driving an SUV...
).
