Steve,
I think that figure is way too optimistic. These cars are at least 30 YO and
were cheap to buy and often poorly maintained and let's not forget that in
many parts of the US they simply rusted away. I personally know of at least
20 that were crushed or parted out over the last 20 years and that doesn't
include the 4 I parted out or had crushed.
I do believe a figure of 2000-3000 is probably closer to reality, if that
many. We don't know how many were destroyed in accidents, how many were
crushed before computers and email brought us together or how many are
rusted hulks sitting in someones garage/barn.
Perhaps our vendors can shed some light on this as they have more contact
with owners.
