There are really 2 issues here. Last week at the Race at the Base in
Virginia I was consistently the fastest car on the race track, but my grid
positions kept falling from 1st to 2nd to 3rd as a Healey and very well
prepared Spridgits were able to pull off lap times a couple 10ths quicker.
On the track I was able to pass each in the slow corners and then run away
from the pack. All was well 'till testosterone, ego and high ambient
temperatures conspired against the Prozac, Preparation H Rogaine Viagra
Automobile City Datsun two thirds of the way through the feature race. DNF,
blown head gasket.
The point is, as any drag racer knows, quicker is more important than faster
-- at least in qualifying! Once the race begins, fast, relative to the other
cars, is what counts.
