67.5 fender questions

I was checking out a 67.5 1600 over the weekend and noticed that there
was something odd about the fenders. There was a large gap of perhaps an
inch where the rear of the front fender (where it comes to a point)
matches up with the top corner of the door and the body near the
windshield frame. It was like this on both sides. Can anyone speculate
as to what would account for this?
