Original Car question

Hi Folks,

So i was recently looking through my copy of the original owner's manual
for the cars, and i noticed the suggested break-in regimen that Datsun put
out.  Now i'm wondering about it--did people really only drive </= 20mph
for the first 1500 miles, </= 35 for the next, and so forth?  Did it really
matter that much?
