For all:
Here is the second installment of painting the car.
(Shot it last Friday, looked very good but had some problems
with drips and a sag)
So....I let the paint cure 36 hrs and wet sanded (360 grit)
all my mistakes away. While I was at it I discovered some
sanding scratches from my body work still visible, so I took
these out also. I wiped the car with damp
paper towels using distilled water to avoid fish
eyes, then a tack rag. I increased gun air
pressure to true 50lbs. My compressor gage is low as it
turns out. I inflated a bike tire to 50, and 2 different tire pressure
gages said 40....this was part of my orange peel
and drip problem. I then adjusted the fan and flow of the
gun and practiced on some spare parts. I shot 2 more
medium wet coats on the car. My antique 1HP compressor
cannot keep up with the gun, so I have to do 1/4 or so
at a time (slowly decreasing pressure was another
problem Friday, I think) then let the tank charge. THe car is
really looking good now. I do have some overspray
dusting problems, and stopped at the paint guy to
see what to do about that. (Persistence in fixing the
problems, and attention to detail, will solve most
anything in the world)
Here is what I'm doing next:
-Let car cure a week
-Gently hand sand the obvious spots with 1500 grit under
running water
-Machine buff whole car with 3M Finesse-it machine polish (no wax)
-Hand buff the whole car with 3M hand glaze Show Car Finish (no wax)
...the paint guy says this will result in the sort of "wet mirror perfect"
finish I'm looking for...and since there is plenty of paint on the car, now,
I can sacrifice a few mils with buffing and even sanding...so they say.
Despite a terrible urge to begin putting on chrome, I wont do it until the
buffing is done......and since I have to sand under running water, well,
I guess its time to put the wheels on and roll her out! Yeee Ha!
The final part 3 of this little saga will be posted in about a week or so.
Pictures avail soon after of the finished product.
Wow, is it red...
Best Regards,
Jim
