Paul,
I was able to take the shocks off the front end when the body was off the
frame with no engine in it. I just used an air ratchet and it came right
off.
Then I proceded to jack the A-frame up and unscrew the the balljoint crown
nuts about 2-3 turns but not all the way off. I was able to release the
spindle from the ball joint then jacked it back up with a standard floor
jack. There was enough weight to remove the rest of the pressure from the
springs to undo the suspension. Seemed like no big deal to me but I have
done this a few times to different types of vehicles.
