I guess the point is, don't let your registration lapse, and buy a car
with a current registration. When I bought the '67 Jag last fall in San
Diego, it had current registration and all I had to do was pay sales tax
and license fees. The PO and I were both Auto Club members and we did
the whole thing there. Didn't even have to GO to the DMV. No
inspections, no smog, nada... ever. I had heard you had to have a smog
inspection even on an exempt car (over 30 years old) to transfer title,
but that is not true. In some ways California still is the Golden
State.
