My 02 worth:
The Miata really should be seen as what it really is: THE car that
single-handedly revived the roadster market in the U.S. After the British
had abandoned it through the neglect of their products, Nissan took over the
sports car market with the 240Z, but there wasn't a widely produced ROADSTER
for many years, until Mazda had the guts to produce what was, on the surface,
a rehash of the Lotus Elan, except that it worked!
Now, look at the revival that has taken place: Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Fiat,
Honda, and MAYBE Nissan have new roadsters and NONE of it would have happened
if not for the Miata. This is the world as it should be: lots of sports cars
made by lots of manufacturers. Long live ALL roadsters!!!!
