AvGas STILL has lead in it. I understand it's a real paperwork nightmare with
the FAA to certify your plane for unleaded.
As for the diesel, i'ts like dumping a can of Marvel Mystery Oil, or Kerosene
in the system. It will help dissolve varnish along the way. Only problem with
this is that if this system is realy cruddy, the loosend "gunk" ends up
somewhere - usually blocking needle/seats and sticking floats along the way.
(clogging fuel filters too). I suppose that if you added this stuff on a
regular basis (as opposed to "fixing" a problem with it) the possiblity of
blockage would be much less.
If you really feel the need to stick cleaner type additives in your fuel, BG
makes a product called "44K". It's the only thing in the realm of "snake oil"
that, after working in the parts/service industry that I would even consider
buying. A lot of my "old-timer" customers swore by "Sea-Foam" (marine stores
generally carry it), but I think it's about as effective as MM Oil.
