its time for the motor. My question is which one. I have two 1600's. One is
the original motor with the aluminum head and the other has a cast head. Is
one more desirable than the other for a minor rebuild? I am just looking to
clean it up and stop the leaks assuming that it is mechanically ok. The cast
head's block number is 00977 and the aluminum's number is 18027.

Dan, based on the numbers, both are 3 main bearing engines rather than the
later 5 main engines (over R-40000 I think), so i'd say use the block/head
combo that appears to be in best shape. I know of no performance difference
in the 2 heads. I assume you save a little weight w the aluminum, but I am
old fashioned and would bet thatr the cast iron on cast iron combo would
handle heat stress better. (just me)
