Bob, YES... there should be a good ground (heavy) wire from the engine to the frame. You should find it on the the starter mounting bolt to the frame. If it is missing, suddenly the starter current tries to return via the choke & throttle cable! Cheers, Tom P.S. Today was a 'hallmark holiday' of Boss' Day.
