Let me try that again, here's what I meant to say last message (I plead new
email program)

Just re-register the car with the black plates. Unless your car has been
registered within the last 7 years. If so then you can not change to "Year
Of Manufacture" plates in California.

You'll pay a fine for not having had the car continuously registered, but
you get to use cool plates. From what I've been told, if the car has been
off the books for 7 years, and you find a set of plates that have not been
registered within the last 7 years - you can try to register the car with
them, and the DMV is none the wiser. (All sorts of disclaimers apply here!!)

I've seen several places that will restore you old plates. They straighten
them up and repaint using the proper paints.

I've also seen hot rodders paint their plates to match their cars - not sure
how they get a way with that!
