end play

While reassembling the rear end I noticed that there were three axle shims
on one side, one thick and two thin, and none on the other. Assuming the
p.o. hadn't fubared things I can put it back together and no problems. But
what is the end play supposed to be and where is it measured from? The
manual talks about the shims but I can't find any specs on end play
tolerances. Thanks
