Good Question, Nathan. I was concerned about that too, so I did some
measuring to determine how much room I had. While I couldn't take a
direct measurement as the SU's aren't installed, I measured (roughly)
from the head manifold surface to the shock tower (this is on a 510
remember) which was about 16 inches. I've swapped in the Motorsports
single brake M/C and that takes up less than two. Then I measured the
manifold/SU combo, 8 7/8. Even with a 3 inch tall air cleaner I should be
fine, but I won't be certain until I bolt it all in.
Not that I have any scientific basis for this, I'd like to keep the top
cover on the air cleaner as far away from the air horn as the air horn is
wide. In other words, if the air horn is 1 1/2 across, I'd like at least
an inch and 1/2 clearence between the airhorn throat and the top cover.
I decided to go with the K&N's rather than the factory assembly primarily
because at some point in time Nissan is certain to cease production on
the OEM filter elements. I'd also bet that the K&N's flow better, too.
After I get it all together I'll post how it works.
