I had an incident happen last night that really made me think of how easy
and dangerous it is to get emotional while driving. My wife got home from
work and I asked if she would like to go for a roadster ride to unwind.
"Great" she said and off we went for a cruise. Full moon and few clouds
with the temp in the high 70s. For South Florida that's perfect. We drove
north on 441 for about 5 miles and then turned around and headed home. We
were running in the inside lane of a 6 lane highway, speed limit 45, with
most people doing 50. (everyone's in a hurry) Suddenly I see the lights of
a large jacked up pickup truck gaining fast. He closed on me so fast he had
to be doing 80. Hits the horn and holds it down. My first reaction was one
of "What's your problem buddy?... I'm doing the limit,.... your speeding!"
Well .... I slowed down even more.!!! Not a good move when your looking at
his bumper and that's all you can see in the mirror. He lays on the horn
even more and we exchange hand gestures and all I wanted to do is get out
right there and kick butt. Well I am 49 and in no shape to kick anyone's
butt. My next reaction was one of pure anger coupled with a 2000 lb., 96 HP
machine, that I was buckled into. I put the pedal to the floor jamming all
4 gears like I was on a drag strip. We left everyone, including a
motorcycle that was ahead of me, in our dust. Now I was doing 80 in a
45........... My wife looked at me and said "If you want to kill yourself
would you please leave me at home first!" (There goes the romantic
evening). I pulled back into our yard knowing I was the fool and my
reaction was wrong, wrong, wrong. Cars and anger do not mix, no matter how
well justified. Just thought I would pass this on.
